The appropriate and safe operation of clinical (diagnostic and therapeutic) equipment is paramount to the proper functioning of any health care facility. The Clinical Engineering department for the Duke University Health System (DUHS) is responsible for testing, repairing, and maintaining in proper and safe operating condition, the hospital?s diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. Major functions of Clinical Engineering are to:
? Perform incoming inspection, installation, preventive and corrective maintenance, and special request service on clinical equipment owned, and/or used within the health system in compliance with regulatory agencies.
? Provide pre-purchase evaluations of new technology and equipment.
? Assist clinical departments with service contract analysis, negotiations and management.
? Provide coordination of clinical equipment installations including, planning, scheduling, and oversight.
? Research equipment issues for health system professional and administrative staff.
? Participate on various committees.
? Conduct device incident investigations.

Clinical Engineering meets the needs of the patients by ensuring that DUHS diagnostic and therapeutic equipment is safe, accurate, available, affordable, and applicable. Clinical Engineering serves as a resource to DUHS staff by performing scheduled and unscheduled inspections, new technology evaluations, pre-purchase evaluations, incoming inspections and device incident investigations.
